Homeward bound
Day two of travel to home is here. I woke up especially early this morning, eager to hit the road. I did need some coffee first, so here I am, thinking about a 500+ mile journey. I really love traveling in 2Wunda. She is comfortable, and I feel very safe in her. When I bought her, Keith at Weber Chevrolet told me his two daughters each had a Chevy Trax. I figured that he would have made sure his girls were driving a safe car.
The other thing, among many bits of information I got from Keith, is that 2WUNDA only has 3 cylinders, where practically every other car around has at least 4 or more. When he told me that I looked at him, surprised. Don’t worry, he said, it’s turbocharged! True to his word, 2WUNDA has plenty of pep and can accelerate with the best of them. Well, maybe not like a Ferrari, but good enough to keep up on the highway.
I am in Oklahoma City, a behemoth of a place. It occupies a lot of square miles and has lots of highways. I’ll have to ask my OnStar advisor for directions to Highway 44 East. The other thing about driving in Oklahoma is that I will enter the toll road system. You can’t drive in Oklahoma for free. I used to chat briefly with the toll booth operators, always friendly people. This time around, the booths are gone and in their place are cameras that take pictures of license plates and send a remote bill sometime later. Another sign of “progress” that took jobs away from real people.
Yesterday I talked to a few people as I drove. That is the best way for me to pass the time as I watch the traffic surrounding me. It was a relatively easy drive because there weren’t too many trucks on the road, trying to pass each other and slowing 2WUNDA down. I also have CarPlay. That means I can listen to podcasts, music, books on “tape”.
Part of my time was taken up listening to two Oprah Winfrey podcasts. One is about a book called, “Beyond Words”. Oprah interviews the author who is an authority on animal/human interactions. I loved his premise that animals share many of our human emotions and values. Then I found another of her podcasts about the science behind Near Death Experiences (NDE’s). For a little more than an hour I listened to a physician talk about his research on NDE’s. He has talked to hundreds of people who were declared clinically dead and “came back” to life. Their experiences do vary, but there are so many common elements in their stories that make the whole thing believable.
When I got to the hotel – I try always to stay at Best Western facilities – I met Tim, behind the desk. Friendly and chatty, he set me up for the night. My dinner was a green chile cheeseburger that I bought in New Mexico and heated in the microwave. It was a delicious ending to a long day.
I had some time to kill before bedtime so I kind of watched Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC. These two people are fine reporters in my opinion. Lawrence was especially animated about a disgusting video that 47 posted about a meeting with two democrats. It is a deranged assault on all democrats that 47 refers to as “pieces of shit”.
While I was listening, I got the urge to work on a story about Ted and Sarah’s new family member, Charlie-dog. Charlie is occupying a position once belonging to their cat, Seymour. Seymour died after nineteen years with Ted and Sarah and the two of them were beyond sad. How they got Charlie is a sweet story, suitable for children. I’ve wanted to write a children’s book for a long time. I don’t know how far I’ll get with this but I sure had fun writing it. I sent it off to Sheila and Jackie, asking for their feedback. It’s possible that Jackie will show it to the boys and get their opinions, too.
So, here I am, about to hit the road to home. It will be another relatively long day, but I have plenty to keep me engaged, starting with my new playlist with Tracy Chapman albums. Life Is Good.
